Halebidu Temple, also known as Hoysaleswara temple appeared to me as any other old Indian Temple the time I first looked at it. Architecture looked quite similar to the Belur Temple(Chinnakesava Temple). I assumed, I am going to experience yet another modest architecture in Southern part of India.
Couple of steps forward, and I already started feeling different. Because, my eyes just started noticing the detailing of the work on the temple. Couple of more steps, and I realized one thing, this temple is not about the tall monumental structure; this is about the marvel of minute detailing and storytelling through the sculptures.
Vishnu resting on Sheshnaag and Laxmi sitting by his side is candid. (This is a temple built by Vishnuwardhana and the Sanctum is of Shiva)
The walls will also educate you with plenty of mythological stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata and Puranas.
Here is one epic battle from Ramayana:
If you are planning to visit this temple, you do not want to miss the Belur’s Chinnakesava Temple, which is very near by.
